 ALEX GODWIN  DIRECTOR (FOUNDER)

Godwin Alex is a  researcher and programmer with over nine years of experience in survey implementation and data management across East Africa, working with organizations such as the World Bank, UNICEF, Georgetown University, and CAMFED, and other donors. Starting his career at EDI Global in 2015, gaining expertise in survey tool design, data quality assurance, and statistical analysis using Stata, Python, SQL, and Excel. He has led major projects including the EdTech Hub study, UNICEF’s Cash Plus evaluation, and Georgetown’s RISE education evaluation, while collaborating with universities and foundations on early childhood development, education, and livelihood studies. Currently, he serves as Director of GJ Research and Consultancy Services, where he provides strategic leadership, develops scalable workflows, and fosters collaboration within research teams.

Meet Our Team

Nelson Rutabana

GIS Analyst
Mr. Nelson Rutabana is a GIS and Remote Sensing expert with extensive experience in environmental management, spatial data analysis, and geospatial tools such as QGIS, ArcGIS, KoboToolbox, and ODK. He has contributed significantly to national datasets at the National Bureau of Statistics, including geospatial data cleaning, demographic mapping, and household segmentation. Internationally, he has represented as a World Bank Youth Summit delegate, YouthMappers Fellow, and presenter at State of the Map events in Africa and beyond. His work reflects innovation, leadership, and a strong commitment to applying geospatial intelligence for sustainable development.

Prof. Senga Kali Pemba

Principal Investigator (PI)
Prof. Senga Kali Pemba is a Tanzanian medical educationist with extensive international experience, currently serving as Head of the Department of Public Health at SFUCHAS in Ifakara. He previously held leadership roles as Deputy Principal for Academic, Research, and Consultancy at SFUCHAS and Director of the Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health. He holds advanced degrees in medical education from the University of Dundee and has academic appointments in Tanzania, Canada, the UK, and Kenya. His research focuses on digital health, maternal health, and medical education, leading projects such as REACH trials, Tanzania Connect, and ETATMBA. Prof. Pemba has consulted widely across Africa, working with organizations like WHO, CIDA, and the World Lung Foundation on health systems and curricula. He has published extensively in international journals and remains committed to advancing medical education, health systems strengthening, and digital health innovations across Africa and beyond.

Josephine J. Minja

Finance Manager
Josephine J. Minja is a professional with a background in business administration and experience across NGOs, government, and private companies. She has worked in roles ranging from volunteer coordination with AIESEC and fundraising at Tumaini la Maisha to business license audits at the Arusha Regional Office and survey work with the National Bureau of Statistics. Her diverse career reflects strong organizational skills, financial planning expertise, and the ability to manage both administrative and fieldwork responsibilities

Faith Steven

Office and Administration Manager Faith Steven is an Assistant Nurse Officer with experience in obstetric, gynecological, medical, and pediatric care, currently working at St. Francis Hospital since 2022. She holds a Diploma in Nursing from Muhimbili University and is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health at Cavendish University. Skilled in patient care, infection prevention, and communication, she combines clinical expertise with compassion and professionalism, making her a valuable member of the healthcare team.

Dr. Claus Thomas

Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Claus Thomas is a microbiologist specializing in zoonoses and antimicrobial resistance, with a Ph.D. earned through a sandwich program between the University of Antwerp and Sokoine University of Agriculture, supported by ACE II and FWO Flanders. He serves as a Lecturer and Research Fellow at SFUCHAS, where he also directs Research, Partnerships, and Community Service, overseeing grants, collaborations, and ethical scientific practice. His research spans rodent-borne pathogens, zoonotic transmission, and One Health, supported by major grants such as FWO Flanders and Erasmus BRIDGE, with numerous peer‑reviewed publications. Beyond academia, he co‑founded Insights Health Partners, consults on public health projects, mentors students, and engages in community outreach, including HIV/AIDS awareness and career guidance.

Monica Alex Chande

Nutrition Program officer
Monica Alex Chande is a Tanzanian Human Nutritionist with expertise in designing and implementing evidence-based nutrition education and social behavior change communication interventions. She holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Human Nutrition from Sokoine University of Agriculture and currently serves as Project Coordinator at the Child and Youth Development Center in Handeni, Tanga. Her professional experience includes developing training modules for farmers, conducting field visits, and coordinating nutrition-sensitive programs for children and youth. She has contributed to research on food systems, gender roles in nutrition, and accountability in national programs, with publications on millet consumption and dietary drivers among school-aged children. Monica’s career reflects a strong commitment to advancing nutrition education, promoting sustainable food practices, and strengthening community health systems in Tanzania and beyond.

Abdul Nassoro


Program Manager
Abdul Nassoro is a seasoned Research and Data Management professional with over nine years of experience leading large-scale social, health, and development studies across Tanzania, including refugee camp settings. He is highly skilled in end-to-end research processes, digital data collection platforms like ODK and SurveyCTO, and data analysis using SPSS, SQL, Stata, and Microsoft Office, while ensuring strict adherence to ethics and quality standards. With a background in accountancy, Abdul has supported projects funded by major international donors such as USAID, UNICEF, and the Gates Foundation, and is recognized for his professionalism, analytical rigor, and strong leadership in research teams.

Dr. Jovin R. Tibenderan

Biostatistician and Nutrition Program office Dr. Jovin R. Tibenderana is a Tanzanian medical doctor and researcher with expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health. He holds a Master of Science in Epidemiology and Applied Biostatistics and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College. Professionally, he has served as a Biostatistician Intern at MDH, Surveillance Officer in Tanzania’s Ministry of Health, and currently as an Assistant Lecturer at SFUCHAS. His research and publications on maternal, newborn, and child health, combined with skills in statistical software and leadership, reflect his commitment to advancing health systems in Tanzania and beyond

Labour Exchange Teams for Development Project (LET4DEV)

(Pilot study), Labour Exchange Teams for Development Project (LET4DEV) is a project in which help workers (mostly women) to form teams and exchange labour within that team, according to a pre-established schedule. The terms of reference described here are for the pilot of the project, that is considered as necessary by the Chair of Development Economics and Economic History (CDEEH) to obtain a funding of the project.

In rural Sub-Saharan Africa, women tend to spend most of their time in home production Fribourg university and in unpaid activities.1 Their access to job market opportunities is restricted due to sept-Sept- Nov 2024 several factors, ranging from social norms dictating the role of women to the scarcity of Tanzania employment opportunities around their places of residence.

Labour exchange teams have been shown to provide several advantages to its members: motivation associated with sharing tedious tasks increases,2 work can also be carried out more efficiently, or at a key time given weather conditions.3 In addition, farmers share information and benefit from more flexible access to labour.4 Thanks to these arrangements, farm productivity is estimated to increase by 30%.5 Last, there is also evidence that women who participate in these teams benefit from greater employment opportunities.

eKichabi

eKichabi: Information Access through Basic Mobile Phones in Rural  I was responsible for implementing the census survey with firms, and a baseline and Tanzania  endline survey with households. The Census took place in 100 villages in Kagera region.

The study employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to evaluate the impact and cost-effectiveness of CAMFED’s support for young women’s livelihoods in Tanzania and Zimbabwe. 

The quantitative component includes cohort data collection with and without a comparison group, while the qualitative component involves in-depth interviews and focus group discussions to capture the experiences and perspectives of participants. 

Additionally, a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) is conducted to assess the financial implications and value generated by the program. Data management practices ensure the ethical handling and confidentiality of the information gathered, and the study is 

grounded in a collaborative and participatory research design, engaging various stakeholders throughout the process.

Next Generation
(Kizazi Kijacho)

Location :  Dodoma Region
Duration: Jan-June 2025
Collaboration: EDI Global and Stockholm university

Kizazi Kijacho: Research to Inform Innovative Early Childhood Development Programming for the Next Generation, – Kizazi Kijacho (The Next Generation) is a six-year program launched in October 2022 to enhance early childhood development (ECD) outcomes in Tanzania. The program focuses on the first 1,000 days of life, integrating a parenting intervention with cash transfers to improve child development. To evaluate its impact, EDI Global collaborated at Stockholm University to implement a rigorous multi-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT), collecting data from 3,580 households in Dodoma Region.

The poster highlights these methodological achievements, particularly the large-scale implementation of a standardized pop-up shop and strategies used to encourage couple participation. These innovations contribute valuable insights into designing household decision-making experiments in similar contexts.

DMPA

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Women’s Health Innovations (WHI) team, through the PrIMA Initiative, is leading a 3-year strategy to support the commercial introduction of DMPA-SC (a self-injectable contraceptive) in the private sector across Kenya, Uganda, Pakistan, and India.

The goal is twofold:

1.Strengthen supply to ensure sustained availability of DMPA-SC.

2.Boost demand by increasing awareness, comfort, and consistent use among women and girls.

This initiative also aims to develop scalable business models that could be adapted globally.
